During the rutting season, large male ungulates such as deer, elk, moose and bighorn sheep, will size each other up.
Not unlike a dance, each male species engages in this sizing up of each other to show their opponent what they are bringing to the fight. This is how they avoid serious confrontation, whereby avoiding possibly injury. However, if both challengers are confident in their physical and mental abilities, a battle will ensue.
